KITCHEN ANIMALS

Roles: Everything (Concept, Illustration, Storyboarding, Animation, Sound Design)

BRIEF

This project was the result of a combination of three desires:

  1. The desire to create a major piece of non-professional work, for the first time since college;

  2. The desire to both hone and showcase my animation skills; and

  3. The desire to make something the general public might enjoy.

After considering the amount of time it took to finish some of my other projects and my free time budget, I gave myself six months (July to December 2018) to complete something.

IDEATION

I asked the following:

  • What’s popular on the Internet? (food, cute animals, humor)

  • What pieces of animation do I wish were a part of my portfolio? (1, 2, 3).

  • What famous pieces of media could I “re-imagine” using motion graphics? (1, 2, 3).

Two ideas stuck in my mind:

  • A Rube Goldberg machine that, by virtue of being non-real, could have things like portals and dragons and lasers and other sci-fi/fantasy elements.

  • Cute animals preparing a (vegan) meal.

Both ideas were viable in my mind, but I was most drawn to trying to figure out how animals would function in a kitchen and so that’s the idea I decided upon.

STYLE DECISIONS

The scene is meant to be comforting and home-y, which suggests warm tones, medium-low saturation, and paper or fabric textures. Low technology fits the animal theme, so no microwaves or refrigerators, and no music.
