BRIEF

Wanting to develop my Sketch, UI, and UX design skills, I brainstormed an app that helps people schedule watch parties with their friends.

IDEATION

Questions I asked:

  • Is this app meant to compete against or work with apps like IMDB and Letterboxd?

  • What features are most important for end users, and which are extraneous?

  • What is the standard end user journey? Is the end user easily able to navigate through the app?

STYLE DECISIONS

As an entertainment app, I felt that incorporating playful animation was justified.
Cheltenham Std (the logo font) gives off vibes of friendliness and solidity.
Burgundy is sophisticated, relaxing, and artistic; a blend of blue (the intellect) and red (the passions).

APP ARCHITECTURE

I started with an ideal user journey in mind - the user finds a movie, determines a date and time, organizes the party, and adds it to their schedule.

I soon realized that this was far from the only journey a user could take; they might have to change details of the party, or simply want to browse movies.

LOGIN, HOME, & MOVIES

I used streaming websites as my jumping-off point for the Home tab, but the overlap with the Movies tab was too severe. I decided that I should instead emphasize the social aspect of this app, as that is where its value lies.

A collection of your friend’s movie preferences is really important for quickly reaching group consensus. Putting the preferences on the home tab will increase the submission rate.

SCHEDULE, PARTY, & UPCOMING

I really struggled to come up with a way to elegantly display the open schedules of multiple people. I couldn’t find any satisfying solutions in my research, and my best attempt was too cumbersome for any group to realistically use. In the end, I axed that part of the design.

Changing the “upcoming” tab to be more multifunctional made sense, since people rarely have more than one watch party schedule at a time.
